Three-Legged Dog Afraid of Human Touch Changes Coat Color After Rescue

When a volunteer from the dog rescue organization Sidewalk Specials noticed some children searching for kibble, curiosity led her to ask who they were trying to feed. The children guided her to an abandoned dog in dire condition, lying on the side of the road. Her heart broke at the sight of the poor dog.

Rescuing Eddie

The dog, later named Eddie, was emaciated and fearful of human touch. Life had been harsh, and he had endured immense suffering.

“He’d lost a leg, making it extremely difficult for him to walk. He was very weak. When he arrived at the rescue, his eyes were filled with fear and emptiness,” said Janice, Eddie’s foster mom, to The Dodo.

The vet’s examination revealed that Eddie was suffering from malnutrition, kidney issues, mange, and tick bite fever, indicating a long road to recovery. Eddie’s front teeth were completely worn down, possibly from eating gravel to survive.

Judging by his condition, Eddie had likely been on his own for a long time. Thankfully, he was finally given a chance at a better life.

Eddie went to a loving foster home with Janice and her husband, Rolf. Two weeks after arriving, Eddie wagged his tail for the first time, and his eyes began to soften. It was a significant step for such a terrified little dog.

Eddie’s Transformation

Day by day, Eddie’s condition improved, and he slowly started to trust humans again. Three months after his rescue, Eddie was a much happier dog. His coat color changed to a rich chocolate brown, a sign of his improving health.

“His happy place is in the bed I think he never had before. His second happy place is definitely the creek in the park. His ball is his security blanket. He’d never had a toy!” Janice said.

Seeing Eddie learn to play was heartwarming. After everything he had been through, Eddie was beginning to forget his painful past. A little bit of love can go a long way.

The rescue team hoped to find Eddie a forever home and created a beautiful video to share his story. He was well-behaved, low-maintenance, and a happy little fellow.

Eddie’s Final Days

Tragically, Eddie didn’t live long enough to find his forever family. Shortly after, he suffered organ failure and had to be put down.

“I think we can all agree that Eddie’s last three months, spent with his foster family, were the best thing that ever happened to him. Respect to his foster family for giving Eddie the chance at happiness and prayers for your broken hearts,” Sidewalk Specials wrote in their post.

Although Eddie’s time was short, he experienced love and care in his final months. His foster parents cherished him, and he will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
