A German Shepherd named Faust was a beloved K-9 officer who served as an Explosives Detection and Patrol dog on the BNSF Railway Police Force in Texas. For eight years, this brave canine faithfully protected the community alongside his handler, Senior Special Agent Bryan Schaffer.

An Emotional Farewell

Honoring his invaluable service to the community and the nation, Faust received an emotional and heartfelt send-off into retirement. His story is one of bravery, loyalty, and the lasting impact of an extraordinary K-9 officer.

On March 3, 2017, Faust embarked on his final patrol. Riding one last time in his patrol vehicle with his trusted handler, K-9 Faust had no idea that he was about to receive his final radio call and a touching tribute for his dedicated service.

As is tradition for retiring officers, Faust was honored with a final radio call. The moment, captured in a video posted on BNSF Railway’s YouTube channel, shows Faust and Schaffer in the squad car while the dispatcher delivers the call:

“K-9 partner Faust just completed his last shift after serving as an Explosives detection and police service canine for eight years and one day, and he is now officially retired. Faust, thank you for your service to the BNSF Railway, the communities you’ve served, and most importantly, for serving and protecting your handler. Now, we wish you a well, healthy, and happy retirement. Radio clear.”

By the end of the call, Faust can be heard whimpering, and his handler, overwhelmed with emotion, gave him a tender kiss. This poignant moment has touched the hearts of many, with the video garnering over 720,000 views since its posting on March 6, 2017.

Thank You For Your Service

“Faust, thank you for all the good you have done for BNSF and other agencies – but mostly I thank you for getting us both home safe after every shift,” Special Agent Bryan Shaffer expressed in a heartfelt farewell post on Facebook. “He is now officially a permanent part of our family,” he added.

After three years of enjoying a well-deserved retirement as a cherished member of the Shaffer family, Faust passed away in 2020 at the age of 13. To Officer Shaffer, Faust was more than a partner.

“The connection between Faust and me was unlike anything I’ve had with any other dog. He saw me at my best and my worst. He saw me laugh and cry. I spent more time with him than with my own family. We just had something special,” Shaffer shared.

Faust’s impeccable work ethic, courage, enthusiasm, and joyful spirit made him a standout. In recognition of his service, he was inducted into the We Ride to Provide (WRTP) Hall of Fame after his death, as announced by BNSF Railway on their Instagram.
