For many, dogs are cherished companions, but when they double as our work partners, parting ways becomes even more heart-wrenching. This was the poignant tale of K9 Tommy, a dedicated German Shepherd who served Ohio’s Department of National Resources alongside Officer Jeremy Berger for an impressive seven years.

Despite Tommy’s unwavering loyalty and dedication, an untreatable and aggressive cancer impaired his well-being. The pain became unbearable, hindering even the most fundamental dog activities. With a heavy heart, Jeremy made the difficult decision to euthanize him.

But Tommy’s remarkable legacy and years of distinguished service resonated with many. As a tribute, law enforcement personnel and their K9s from across Ohio congregated at the Blanchard Valley Veterinary Clinic.

They assembled to offer one final salute to this exceptional canine officer. As Tommy was tenderly transported on a stretcher with a flag gracing his form, officers and their K9 companions maintained a solemn silence, honoring him with a heartfelt minute of silence.

Jeremy, along with his loved ones, bid a tearful farewell to their beloved Tommy. The poignant atmosphere intensified as a final radio call echoed, “To 3280, Officer Tommy, you have been a beacon of loyalty and protection to Ohio’s citizens. Thank you for your service, good boy. Your vigilant watch has come to a close. Rest peacefully. Your sacrifice remains etched in our memories.”
