A frightened little puppy, spooked by a car, darted under a canal channel, becoming trapped in the obsidian darkness. But Officer Joe Brazil, with his instinct for service, wouldn’t let her remain stranded.
On May 2, 2016, Peggy Edwards brought the story to light on Facebook, recounting how the innocent Yorkshire terrier puppy, named Cece, was startled and took refuge in the tunnel.
“She was about 20-25 feet in, clinging for dear life,” Peggy shared, her concern palpable.

Peggy, fearing she might drive the timid creature deeper into the tunnel, reached out to the Woonsocket Police Department, Rhode Island for assistance.
In no time, Officer Brazil arrived, all set to be the hero.

As Peggy narrated the events, Officer Brazil, prioritizing Cece’s safety, removed his shoes and socks, ready to venture into the dark, damp tunnel.
Local media, WJAR NBC10, managed to catch up with him. “As I approached, I could see Cece, clinging to the side, shaking in fear,” he mentioned.

Brazil’s gentle approach ensured Cece felt safe. Drawing her close with careful finger movements, he picked her up, a thankful expression in the dog’s eyes. “It felt like she was expressing gratitude,” Brazil shared with WJAR NBC10.

Contrary to initial thoughts, Cece wasn’t an abandoned stray. She belonged to Michelle Perez, who had received her from her mother-in-law.
Unfortunately, Cece slipped away the very next day. A distressed Michelle said, “She’s only five months old. I spent sleepless nights just driving around, calling her.”

A heartwarming reunion became possible because of Peggy Edwards’ awareness and Officer Joe Brazil’s unwavering commitment to service. With Cece back home, this touching tale ended with comfort and joy.
