After Owner’s Passing, Two Grieving Dogs Struggle to Find Their Way

Just like humans, dogs deeply feel the loss of their family members. The journey to healing can span days or months, necessitating a nurturing touch and immense patience.

In Nuevo, California, a particularly poignant story unfolded as two dogs, Debby and Gidget, were left to mourn their owner who succumbed to a prolonged illness. The pair spent their days curled up on a couch in their home, visibly devastated and lost.

Without a familiar guide or a clear path forward, they were left disoriented until a compassionate rescue team intervened.

A Sorrowful Sight

Doreen, a friend of the deceased owner, reached out to Hope For Paws for help with Debby and Gidget. Despite her best intentions, she couldn’t coax the frightened canines out of their hiding.

Rescuers Katie McKittrick and Alex Babcock from HFP embarked on a two-hour journey to the location. Doreen explained the dogs’ reluctance to leave the house, only venturing out for food once she was gone.

Alex and Katie understood that the dogs’ behavior was a natural response to their profound loss. Upon entering the house, they found Debby and Gidget huddled together on the couch, their eyes wide with fear. With gentle care, Katie secured both dogs, preparing them for a journey to a new beginning.

Doreen expressed immense gratitude as the team successfully transported Debby and Gidget, marking the first step towards their recovery.

The initial care and checkup were followed by a stay with the L A Animal Rescue team, who fostered the dogs until they could find a forever home.

Initially, Debby and Gidget were apprehensive about any interaction. However, as time passed, they began to reveal their personalities. Gidget emerged as the pack leader, with Debby always by her side, looking up to her as a protector.

The HFP team described Gidget as the more protective one, taking charge and showing affection through kisses and cuddles once she felt comfortable.

After several months in foster care, both dogs transformed into affectionate and joyful companions, ready to bring happiness to a new family.
